February Teacher of the Month: Janna Duck

Each month, Marshall ISD celebrates the outstanding contributions of our campus faculty to the overall educational experience of our students. These professionals work countless extra hours at home, on weekends, and over holiday breaks with one focus in mind -- to make MISD and their campus Marshall Proud and Maverick Strong for our students.

The Teacher of the Month for February 2018 at Marshall High School, as selected by Principal, Mrs. Tina Brown, is Mrs. Janna Duck, who serves as a Math teacher and assistant girls soccer coach at MHS.

"Mrs. Duck teachers Algebra II and Pre-AP Algebra II and is always looking for ways to present lessons that are not only aligned with the standards, but engage the learners as well," said Mrs. Brown in her nomination of Janna. "Recently, Mrs. Duck took a risk and offered her Pre-AP students the opportunity to take a lesson that they had learned in the fall and create a fun and engaging way to present the information. The students were so creative and did an outstanding job. Teaching well-organized lessons, building relationships with students, and making the learning experience more interesting is what she does to make a difference. Marshall High is thankful for quality instructors like Mrs. Janna Duck!"

Hobbies/Things I like to do in my spare time: "I enjoy spending time with my family, traveling during the summer and relaxing at my house on the weekends."

What made you want to enter a career as a teacher?: "I always wanted to teach when I was younger. I would wake up early just to play school with my brother before we actually went to school and of course I was the math teacher! I had a coach in high school that gave me confirmation that teaching was my calling. She was truly an inspiration to me and I was grateful for her guidance. The determination to pull the best from every student she taught and athlete she coached was truly amazing. I wanted to leave impressions on high school kids like she left on all of us young ladies. Everyone tried to talk me out of teaching so I started my college path wanting to be an accountant. It took two and a half years for me to realize that just wasn't right for me. I changed majors and immediately knew I was making the right decision."

What  do you see as your most important role as a teacher?: "Even though teaching mathematics and coaching soccer is my job title, the most important role I have is being a role model. I want kids to look at me like I looked at Coach Davis. I want them to know that they are important and that I believe they can be as successful as they desire to be"

Who were some of the most influential teachers/educators in your life?
"Coach Davis and Mrs. Romanski (my 4th grade teacher)."

What do you enjoy the most about teaching and serving specifically at Marshall High School?: "I love the interaction I get with students each day. High school kids are interesting and I enjoy getting to learn about their lives. Getting to educate them and prepare them for the future is great, but true joy comes from those that have gone on to be successful and come back to let you know they are doing big things. That has probably been my favorite. I also enjoy my coworkers. I have built some great relationships and they keep me going when there are bad days."

What are some things you hope to accomplish in your career? Future plans?: "My future plans are to continue doing what I am doing. I truly enjoy the position I am in. I feel like this is my calling and I am where I need to be. I want to continue to grow and improve as a teacher, coach, and mentor. I think it is important for kids to see consistency and continuing to be here year after year gives them reassurance that I will be around to help them."
